For most people visiting New Zealand, it's not long before they realise that there's so much to do and see, that their holidays are simply not long enough.
Most visitors to Milford Sound only spend a day in the area. However, if you are able to come back to Milford Sound on your next trip, or can even extend your stay, these are a few of the activities available to you:
- Boat tours – For travellers visiting Milford Sound for one day only, a cruise of the sounds generally takes between one and two hours.
- Overnight boat cruises – Extended overnight cruises on Milford Sound are also available.
- Underwater observatory – Provides viewing of black coral, usually only found in much deeper waters.
- Canoeing – Kayaking or canoeing with Mitre Peak as your backdrop is an unforgettable experience.
- Hiking – The big drawcard of the Milford area for many outdoor enthusiasts are the hiking and walking opportunities available in the area. Not only is there the famous Milford Track (53.5 km), but the Kepler, Hollyford, Routeburn Tracks amongst others.
- Scenic flights – Helicopter, fixed wing and float planes offer flightseeing opportunities.
- Fishing and hunting – Permits need to be obtained, but for visitors staying in the area longer, deer, wapiti and possums can be hunted, whilst lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout.
